Beginner classical dance - foundations

Beginner students learn posture, body control, the basic adavus, hasta mudras, and short rhythmic phrases. The programme is offered in Bharatanatyam, Mohiniyattam, and Kuchipudi - each style follows an equivalent progression in its own vocabulary. The classroom emphasizes patience, classroom discipline, and a steady learning pace so that every student - child, teen, or adult - finds a confident way into the form.

Posture & body alignment

Aramandi, muzhumandi, neck and shoulder isolation, foot placement, and breath control.

Adavus - set 1

Tattadavu, Nattadavu, Visharu adavu - the first foundational steps with proper jathi recitation.

Hasta mudras

Asamyukta (single-hand) and Samyukta (combined) hastas with classical meanings.

Rhythm reading

Adi tala, rupaka tala, and basic jathi recitation by counting and clapping.

Do I need any prior dance training to join the beginner programme?

No. The beginner programme is designed specifically for first-time learners. The curriculum starts from posture, basic adavus, and hand gestures.

What should a beginner student bring to class?

Comfortable, modest practice wear, hair tied back, and a water bottle. A practice salwar or churidar set is recommended once the student is comfortable. Ankle bells (salangai) are introduced later in the programme.

How long does the beginner programme take?

Most students need 12–18 months to comfortably complete the basic adavu sets and short rhythmic phrases before moving into the technique programme. The pace is intentionally patient.
